Young Adult Ministry

If there is one word that defines the Young Adult life stage, it’s “transition.” We transition out of college into professional or graduate school life.  We transition from being a dependent to being dependable.  We transition from following to leading.  We transition from singleness to marriage.  Facing this magnitude of transition can be isolating, frustrating and sometimes downright scary.

And so, the Young Adult Ministry at Highrock helps young adults connect to one another through weekly fellowship, both as a large group and in smaller Covenant Groups, so as to transition together.  Our aim is to see lives transformed through the study of Scripture, intentionally inclusive community, and sharing our gifts as the body of Christ.

If you are new to the highrock community, come check out a FirstFriday on the first Friday of the month. This is an evening designed with you in mind! At FirstFriday we devote the evening to fellowshiping over meal, teaching, praise and prayer, and is a great way to meet people and check out who we are as a community.

All the other Fridays of the month, Friday Night Fellowship is a time where Young Adults get together for small groups and to hear a lifestory from a member of our community. This is one of the main ways to get plugged in and go deeper in community as a young adult or college student. Please check out the Small Groups below for a listing of the various small groups we offer on Friday nights, or contact Pastor John at  for more information.

All Friday Night Fellowship events start at 7:30pm unless noted otherwise on the calendar.

Men’s Groups

koinonia 1 & 2

As young adults, various responsibilities vie for our attention – commitments at school, work, and church occupy most of our time and energy.  We find ourselves constantly surrounded by people, yet we still search for an intimate community with which to share life.  Koinonia aims to explore the biblical notion of community, or koinonia, by sharing, serving, and facing life together.  We strive to become a community of brothers who are committed to living the Christian life through real fellowship, honest accountability, and consistent encouragement.

king’s cross

In this men’s group, we will read King’s Cross by Tim Keller and explore how to live as Christian men in our community. Our goal is to meet you where you are with your walk with Jesus and to allow members of the group to encourage, support and challenge one another. A typical meeting will consist of group sharing, group discussion guided by the book to see how we can incorporate Jesus’ teachings into our lives, followed by prayer for members. We seek intentional men that will commit to attending the scheduled Friday night meetings.

Co-ed groups

training wheels

Let’s face it, real life can be challenging and navigating the first year out of college can be daunting. We suddenly find that relationships take much longer to build and loneliness can become a more regular acquaintance. As a new adult in the real world, we find our selves asking questions like, “How do I incorporate faith into my life and into the workplace?” Six months into a career that looks at excel spreadsheets and making power point slides, we can easily start to get disenfranchised and wonder, “Is this it? Is this all that life has to offer?” Well, Training Wheels is designed for people just like you! If you are a December ’10 or May ’11 graduate, we want to help you build community while you transition into this new life stage while growing in our love for Jesus.

QT for Cuties

The purpose of our group is to build community while discussing challenging issues that we face in our lives, but tend to overlook or have difficulty exploring on our own. Our aim is to encourage each other so as to grow in our faith while developing deep relationships with fellow brothers and sisters as we bring together our unique perspectives from all ages and life stages.

We meet Wednesdays in Cambridge at 7:00pm.

back staff

The back staff was an instrument used by explorers to navigate by measuring the altitude of the sun without looking at it directly. We cannot see Jesus directly today, but we can navigate our lives using the Gospel. Our group will explore John in conjunction with corresponding accounts in other parts of the Bible. Through these studies, we will examine different perspectives that harbor shared truths, and what they mean for our lives today.

4:ONE

The focus of our co-ed group this fall semester is to explore the way we live our faith on a personal, spiritual, and community level through the book of Ephesians. Then in the spring, we hope to look at how we are called to be ministers of the gospel, specifically in the area of social justice. We also aim to develop deep, supportive relationships with one another and to have fun together inside and outside of our friday fellowship.

the reason for god

The Reason for God is an opportunity for anyone (Christian or non-Christian) to explore Christianity over food, with others at a similar stage in their journey, and in a relaxed and friendly setting. Six common objections to Christianity will be discussed and all questions are welcome. Our goal is to foster mutual understanding, dialogue and relationship.

Women’s groups

girls gone wise

We will explore what the Bible states about how we can be wise and discerning women, in a world where Satan has made the boundaries so blurry.

This Boston based women’s group seeks to grow together and deepen our relationship with God as we explore together how we can tangibly be the salt and light of this world.  Through our studies “Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild" by Mary Kassian, our goal is to get back to the basics of what it means to follow God, being a daughter of Christ.  We will be tackling real issues that are pertinent in our lives today with Biblical guidance.  Through our studies, discussions, prayers and accountability, we seek to tangibly live out the Gospel in our lives.

Wednesdays at Julia's apartment at 7:30PM at 1470 Beacon street, Greenline- C line

works in progress

As women who may be navigating through graduate school, work, relationships, family commitments, and various transitions, we are often bombarded with many things that compete for our time, attention, money, and ultimately, our hearts. Various idols -- success, wealth, power, love, or cultural norms --  too easily displace God from His rightful seat on the throne of our lives. Our group is for women seeking to critically examine their hearts in order to deepen their relationships with God and to reconnect with our first love. We want to provide a safe place for authentic discussions and genuine accountability with other like-minded women. We will be studying "Counterfeit Gods" by Timothy Keller and accompanying Bible passages through the fall.

“No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another,

God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.”

~1 John 4:12~

We know God loves us. And we love God. But many people don’t know this love. We believe God’s love is made real to those around us when they see the way we are able to love.

So we want to learn how to love radically.

This covenant group is for women who are committed to be challenged in their spiritual walks with Christ to live radical lives for God, His people, and His purposes.  We will be studying the Word through inductive Bible study and complementing the study with a book (Radical by David Platt) that will challenge us to live and love with abandon.

Love. We hear and see this four-letter word everywhere and in every context, but have you stopped to think about what it really means? Maybe you’ve experienced love in the form of a relationship, a friendship, or family. Or maybe you’re one of those fortunate people who love their job or scholarly pursuit. Perhaps you’ve used this word to describe an attachment to abstract things such as an object, music, or a hobby. However you define and describe love, we can agree love means different and personal things for each person.

That being said, have you ever been in love? Your entire perspective changes and we hear it often said: love can make you do crazy things we’ve never dared or thought possible of ourselves. It drives us, motivates us, and compels us to do anything and everything for whatever/whoever is the cause of our love. Isn’t love great? Want to be in love with a God who is love, and is crazy enough to love us with His crazy love?

This group is for women who seek a community that will challenge them to take action wherever they are in life, strengthen their faith and most of all, to grow in our personal relationship with God as we, individually and as a group, strive to love God and love those He loves. We’ll be reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan
